South-Doyle High School

South-Doyle High School is a high school located at 2020 Tipton Station in Knoxville, Tennessee, operated by the Knox County Schools school district.

South-Doyle is the only high school in the South Knoxville area, though it shares a history with several former schools. Young High School was established in 1913 and was joined by South High School in 1952 and Doyle High School in 1968. In 1976, Young and South were merged to form South-Young High School. In 1991, Doyle and South-Young were merged, creating the current South-Doyle High School. The campus includes both the former Doyle High campus (now the main campus area) and the campus for the former Doyle Middle school (now the Young campus).

The extremely diverse student population is predominantly Caucasian while African-Americans and other ethnic groups do constitute a sizable minority. The school community is composed of families from varied situations living in rural, urban, and suburban areas. Dr. Clifford Davis is the current head principal. He entered into this position beginning in the 2010–2011 school year.

South-Doyle has been competing in athletics since the 1991–1992 school year, the year they opened. The Cherokees have won seven state championships in all sports, with six of those being individual championships.

Football

The South-Doyle Cherokees football team is coached by Clark Duncan. Duncan last coached in 1992, for Powell High School in Knoxville, where he appeared in a state championship game in 1991. The Cherokees' last playoff appearance was in 2002, where they were subsequently knocked out in their first game. The team has struggled over the past few years, even having an 0-10 season, dubbed "The Trail of Tears" by the student body in 2004. In 2010 the Cherokees once again had another devastating season, finishing 1-9. On October 8, 2010, South Doyle snapped their 17-game losing streak by beating Cocke County, 30-14.

On December 15, 2008, Head Coach Erik Hutchins announced he would leave South-Doyle and go to Morristown West High School to become the offensive coordinator.

Marching Band The South-Doyle Marching band has been to several competitions and on many trips since its arrangement. It had been directed by Chris Satterfield for many years, but beginning with the 2010-2011 school year the band has been directed by Steve Taylor.

The marching band has a different theme each football season. In 2009, the theme was "Latin America". In 2010, the theme was "Music of the Night". The performance set list features songs as following: "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor," "Phantom of the Opera," "Wishing You were Somehow Here Again," songs from "Nightmare Before Christmas," and, of course, "Music of the Night." All percussion and Drumline/Battery parts are written by Steve Rodgers, the assistant band director.
